for the use of record cards and X-rays. REFERENCES. RADIOLOGY plays a comparatively small though important part in the diagnosis of brain tumours. It is essentially a question of team-w%ork divided between the neuro-logical surgeon, the neurologist, the occulist, and radiologist. The neurological surgeon is the captain of the team, and it is he who collects together and correlates the evidence (leduced from the various methods of examination, finallv putting them together as one assembles a jigsaw puzzle, until the picture is complete and the diagnosis is established. In some cases the interpretation of the radliographs is easy, but in many cases it is extremely difficult, and calls for considerable experience and an accurate knowledge of the anatomy of the brain, the pathology of brain tumours, and every detail of the procedure of the examiniatioin wvhichi has been carried out. For this reason teamwork is essential, for in ma!ny cases the radio-logist does not possess the information upon the clinical side of the case to enable him to make a diagnosis from the X-ray appearanices alone. In some ilnstanlces the X-ray diganosis can be made without any reference to the cliniical history or neuro-logical findings, but in many others localization of a tumour is extremely cdifficult, even while utilizing every metlhocl of examination at our disposal. I should like, first, to refer very briefly to the routine examination of the skull, for such an investigation always precedes ventriculographv and may give valuable *A paper read before the Ulster Medical Society, 13th February, 1936. 147

Obstructive hydrocephalus in childhood.

The differential diagnosis of obstructive hydrocephalus in childhood involves a consideration of two main groups of cases, cerebellar tumours and obstructive lesions of a non-neoplastic nature. The most common of the non-neoplastic conditions are stenosis of the aqueduct of Silvius and obliteration of the outlet of the fourth ventricle. In the literature on obstructive hydrocephalus the radiolo...

The Value of the Examination of the Cerebrospinal Fluid in the Diagnosis of Intracranial Tumours.

Examination of the lumbar cerebrospinal fluid in the diagnosis of cerebral tumour is less often resorted to than formerly, partly because in some instances there may be a risk of coning after lumbar puncture, but more especially because arteriography and ventriculography are now more frequently used for locating the tumour and examination of the ventricular fluid is often found to be more conve...

enough for accurate localization of the pus, and a lumbar puncture would have added only hazard to the diagnosis. When abscesses are metastatic or multiple the problems of localization are difficult. In solving these problems-which include abscesses in the deep frontal and the parietal regions -ventriculography, electroencephalography, and brain scanning play an important part. Hence it is a ma...
